Vietnam, EFTA sign free trade agreement
HANOI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which comprises Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein, signed a free trade agreement in Hanoi on Sunday, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
Under the agreement, EFTA countries will maintain zero import tariffs on industrial and seafood products originating from Vietnam once the agreement enters into force, while Vietnam will gradually reduce or eliminate tariffs on most such products from EFTA countries within 11 years, the government portal reported on Saturday.
Selected agricultural products, including cheese, coffee and chocolate, will also gain duty-free access to Vietnam, subject to a transition period of up to 16 years.
The agreement also seeks to simplify and modernize customs procedures. It provides for national treatment of investors in designated non-service sectors, including agriculture, mining and manufacturing, subject to certain exceptions, and promotes transparency and reduces technical barriers to trade.
Bilateral trade between Vietnam and EFTA member countries averages nearly 2 billion U.S. dollars annually. Vietnam mainly exports seafood, footwear, textiles, machinery and electronics, while importing industrial equipment, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and production materials, according to the Vietnam News Agency. ■
