French Open: Andreeva reaches first Grand Slam final, qualifier Chwalinska continues dream run

PARIS, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Eighth seed Mirra Andreeva advanced to her first Grand Slam final on Thursday, defeating 15th-seeded Marta Kostyuk 6-1, 6-3 at the French Open, while qualifier Maja Chwalinska continued her remarkable run by reaching the championship match.

At 19, Andreeva became the youngest women's singles Grand Slam finalist since Coco Gauff reached the French Open final in 2022.

Andreeva dominated from the beginning and wrapped up victory in an hour and 16 minutes, revenging the loss in the Madrid final last month, where Kostyuk had beaten her in straight sets.

"I'm just super happy with the way I played today," said the Russian. "Then I'm happy I got revenge from the Madrid final, then I'm happy as well that I'm in my first Grand Slam final. All of these feelings have combined."

Andreeva praised her rival who entered the semifinal with a 17-0 record on clay this season.

"I was very nervous coming into this match. Obviously, she's had an amazing season. Until this match, she hadn't lost a match on clay. That brought a lot of pressure. She's an amazing player, very tough opponent. I'm very excited about the last match in Paris."

Andreeva will face one of the most unexpected finalists in recent Grand Slam history after world No. 114 Chwalinska defeated 25th-seeded Diana Shnaider 7-6 (4), 6-4 to become only the second qualifier in the Open era to reach a women's Grand Slam final.

The Polish left-hander has now won nine consecutive matches in Paris, including three in qualifying.

Chwalinska is one win away from matching the feat achieved by Emma Raducanu, who won the 2021 U.S. Open as a qualifier.

"I mean, [it feels] like a dream, honestly. I don't know what's going on," she said. "I don't know what to say, I'm sorry. I'm just very happy."
