Xinhua Headlines: Riding Asia-Pacific momentum: China, ASEAN chart new course for regional development
JAKARTA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Long seen as a vibrant way station for merchants and traders, Southeast Asia has served as a crossroads where ideas, goods and civilizations converged across vast waterways and fertile lands.
From awe-inspiring ancient temples to centuries-old blue-and-white porcelain preserved in modern museums, countless relics and treasures across the region bear witness to the long-standing ties with its northern neighbor, China. Today, that tradition of good neighborliness and friendship continues to define cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
As ASEAN celebrates its 59th anniversary on Saturday, this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), the 35th anniversary of the establishment of China-ASEAN dialogue relations and the fifth anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership. Against the backdrop of rising global uncertainties, analysts said maintaining the momentum of positive cooperation between ASEAN and China is mutually beneficial.
INSEPARABLE NEIGHBORS
In 2003, China became the first major country to accede to the TAC, prompting other countries to follow suit and significantly elevating ASEAN's international profile. Now China continues its unwavering support for ASEAN Community-building and ASEAN's pursuit of unity and self-strengthening.
During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila in late July, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn spoke highly of ASEAN-China relations and the outcomes of practical cooperation between the two sides, expressing appreciation for China's support for ASEAN centrality in regional architecture.
Kao said ASEAN and China are inseparable neighbors, and that China is ASEAN's most important comprehensive strategic partner, with the two sides having established 65 cooperation mechanisms.
ASEAN looks forward to closer strategic alignment with China, deeper practical cooperation in trade, investment, digital economy and other sectors, more people-to-people exchanges, and steady progress in ASEAN-China relations, Kao added.
In line with this vision, the building of a community with a shared future with neighboring countries has steadily gained traction, as China has reached important common understandings with eight ASEAN member states on forming a community with a shared future bilaterally, according to Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
